Warmers are used at the beginning of the lesson to ‘activate’ students when they first arrive in the classroom. A warmer is generally around 10 minutes long and some teachers like their warmers to reflect the language they are studying in class (maybe as a quick revision exercise of the language studied last lesson or brainstorming vocabulary around the topic of the lesson you are about to teach). However, it’s not necessary for the warmer to be related to the lesson’s topic. The main point of the warmer is to make students feel relaxed and comfortable in the classroom and also get their brains thinking in English after chatting to their friends in their mother tongue all day. Essentially you are getting students into an English speaking frame of mind before they are introduced to the new target language of the lesson.
