In this essay there are descriptions of two outstanding pictures – “Shortly After the Marriage” by William Hogarth and “The Blue Boy” by Thomas Gainsborough.
English painting of the 18th century is represented by a brilliant succession of geniuses – Hogarth, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Lawrence, Constable and Turner.

Works of Hogarth and Gainsborough reflect the main features of English art – exclusive love of the portrait and landscape and the moral strain.
William Hogarth (1697 – 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist and social critic. He pioneered western sequential art. Hogarth started as an engraver. He took up oil painting later, and by 1730-s developed into an original painter of life-sized portraits.
Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was a celebrated English painter. He was good at painting portraits and landscapes. Gainsborough refused to adopt his contemporaries' methods and standards of painting, instead using his own unique love of vibrant colors and realistic depictions of his clients.
