Introduction

Idioms are considered to be the layer of language that is most difficult to acquire. One problem is constituted by the fact that it is impossible to translate an idiom without a dictionary, another problem lies in the sphere of understanding the semantics of the idiom.
Translation of idiomatic expressions is a very painstaking task. The translator should be expert not only in his or her own language to be able to find a good idiomatic equivalent, but also in the language of the original text, as it is sometimes problematic to see an idiom in the text.
Idioms are considered to belong to imaginative linguistic units, as they take imaginative efforts to be clearly understood. Lately, the tendency to use the such language units has been recorded in newly produced texts, though the texts that have long since been created represent the best course of idiomatic expressions. To investigate the ways of translation of idiomatic units in classical texts is a great experience for a future translator; by this fact the topicality of the research is justified.
The object of the research work is an idiom as a linguistic unit; the subject, in its turn, concerns the methods and problems of Russian translation of the English idiomatic units.
The objective of the research is to give a detailed analysis of the methods which are necessary for translation of the English idioms having the works by O. Henry as their source as well as to point out the main problems of such translation.
To achieve the before-mentioned objective the following research tasks have been determined:
- to study idioms as linguistic units and translational objectives;
- to make an analysis of idioms’ translation.
The following scientific methods are used in the research: critical study of scientific literature on the topic, translational analysis.
Structurally the research paper consists of introduction, two main parts, conclusion, bibliography, and appendix.
The first main part deals with the study of idioms as linguistic units, as well as with the description of methods applied while translating idiomatic units from English into Russian.
The second part is devoted to the practical analysis of idioms found in the works by O. Henry and methods and problems of their translation.
Conclusion contains basic inferences to the research.
Appendix consists of the collection of all the idioms from the O. Henry’s works analyzed in the paper.
