The aim of this research work was to give the definition of the term phraseology and show different approaches to this problem as well as to the problem of classification of phraseological units; to describe the translation techniques offered for translation of such a complicated phenomenon as idioms; to write out the phraseological units used by O'Henry in his "Short Stories" and to analyze their Ukrainian translation.
According to the aim of the research the following research tasks were put forward:
 to classify the main types of phraseological units;
 to analyze the structure of different types of idioms;
 to reveal the ways of translation of praseological units.
 to find the phraseological units used by O'Henry in his "Short Stories" and to analyze the ways of their translation.
The objects of the investigation were phraseological units of different degree of stability, and the idioms and set expressions used by O'Henry, in particular, the sample from his stories comprises examples.
The methods used for investigating the theme were description, classification, analysis and comparison. This theme is very topical nowadays. It was found out that phraseology presents difficulties for normative writers and translators; even advanced non-native writers and translators may fail to communicate effectively as a result of a lack of phraseological competence.
