The given diploma paper deals with the problem of semantic selectivity of the derivatives with the final negative component in modern English.
It consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusions, summary, list of literature and appendix.
The first chapter is theoretical and tells about word structure in modern English. It describes the morphological structure of a word, principles of morphemic analysis and derivational level of analysis.
Chapter 2 gives general characteristic of the derivatives with the final negative component and differences between prototypical –less and –free patterns.
Conclusions briefly summarize the results of the investigation.
The list of literature: contains the enumeration of the dictionaries, books, monographs, articles, and other sources of information.
In the Appendix we can see a list of derivatives with the final negative component –less and –free that are divided into three groups:
I. Group of derivatives with anthroponimic feature:
1) names of persons (concerning family, social status etc.):
2) non-direct anthroponims –
а) names of parts of body, organs etc.
b) physical and moral features, character, behavior, talent, etc.
с) professional sphere, property status, place of inhabitation, etc.

II. Group of derivatives with non-anthroponimic features:
1) physical features, quality of things mechanisms, time, direction, space, movement, etc.
2) attributes of (flora and fauna, geographic conditions, etc.)
III. Adverbs, ending with –less.
The principle of semantic selectivity is that the same thing or situation can be described from different sides with help of different features and characteristics.
A derivative is a stem that is formed by combining a root with an affix that adds a component of meaning that is more than just inflectional. The meaning of a derivative is determined by its context, not its parts.
