This paper aims to provide an account of similes and metaphors in the story 'The Old Man and the Sea' by E.Hemingway, which serves as the starting point for an exploration of the problems they can pose when translated into other languages. It deals with the nature and function of similes, the criteria for their classification, and their interpretation. The data discussed are taken not only from the story 'The Old Man and the Sea', but also from English texts belonging to various textual genres. Simile is much less investigated than metaphor, although it occurs as frequently in discourse. While metaphor has attracted interest and research in a number of different disciplines – philosophy, linguistics, cognitive psychology, literary theory and criticism – with an extraordinary amount of papers and books on the subject, simile is much less investigated. The same is true in Translations Studies, where the translation of metaphor has been treated in many studies, e.g. Newmark, Snell-Hornby and Toury, while the translation of simile is, when referred to, simply mentioned in passing. Simile is a figure of speech used in general language as well as specialized language, in everyday conversation as well as literary, journalistic and promotional texts. Research on simile is carried out within rhetoric, literary studies, linguistics and psycholinguistics, often discussing simile along with metaphor [32, 244].
The tasks of this diploma paper are:
- to study simile and metaphor as figures of speech;
- to analyse classification and functions of simile;
- to analyse classification and functions of metaphor;
- to determine the difference between simile and metaphor;
- to select examples of simile and metaphor in the story ‘The old man ad the sea’ by Heminway;
- to analyse simile and its functions in the novel;
- to analyse metaphor and its functions in the novel.
